SNAP: Meeting Students’ Needs with a Large-Scale Multi-Site Finals Week Event

Description

The Long Night Against Procrastination is a well-established and successful event running overnight at the University of Manitoba’s Elizabeth Dafoe Library biannually. To encourage better study and lifestyle habits, in the fall of 2017 the event was reimagined and rebranded into a four night evenings-only event at both Elizabeth Dafoe Library and the Sciences and Technology Library. We surveyed students at the event to discover whether or not students like and benefit from the change in programming and event offerings at end of semesters in the University of Manitoba Libraries. In this presentation, we share a program description and survey results.

It's (Probably) Not Them: How Workplace Systems Destroy Employee Motivation and What You Can Do About It!

Description

As managers and supervisors, we often blame individual employees when they disengage or seem to lack motivation. But what if it's not them? What if it's us: the systems, practices and management techniques we use that cause the problem? Awareness of our role in employee disengagement is key to improvement and a happier, more engaged workplace. This conference session will introduce participants to the underlying philosophies that have helped to forge current workplace systems and practices. The session will contrast those philosophies with what we understand now about motivation and employee satisfaction from the latest research on healthy workplaces, and uncover the seemingly innocuous workplace and management practices that demotivate staff and fuel employee disengagement. By understanding what lies at the heart of employee disengagement, we can become better managers and advocates for our departments, our libraries, and ourselves.

Bright Spot Library Practices in Manitoba: What’s Working and How Can We Do More of It?

Description

A study, by the Public Library Services Branch (PLSB), to discover the best practices of the top performing libraries in the province. The study aimed to find out why some libraries were reporting declining statistics, while other where seeing increased statics. We set out to try and determine if we could find any common elements in the libraries that were seeing increased statistics. Would it then be possible to distil best practices and then share it with the other libraries? By studying the statistics, we were able to determine which libraries had high activity in three key areas compared to their population. The process gave PLSB a starting point and means for comparison and further study. The resulting report gathers the information we discovered on common elements between these locations, and could make a good comparison for those that wish to improve their own key performance indicators like gate count, circulation and turnover
