SNAP: Meeting Students’ Needs with a Large-Scale Multi-Site Finals Week Event

Description

The Long Night Against Procrastination is a well-established and successful event running overnight at the University of Manitoba’s Elizabeth Dafoe Library biannually. To encourage better study and lifestyle habits, in the fall of 2017 the event was reimagined and rebranded into a four night evenings-only event at both Elizabeth Dafoe Library and the Sciences and Technology Library. We surveyed students at the event to discover whether or not students like and benefit from the change in programming and event offerings at end of semesters in the University of Manitoba Libraries. In this presentation, we share a program description and survey results.

Collection Development and Management

Description

This information has been transferred to Word documents as this forum doesn't support Excel documents. Statistics are totalled at the end of the year and put into the first document '2017 circulation stats to use in purchasing 2018 books for Toolshed' based on the different categories that are set up for our library. The second document '2018 Book Budget Report for Toolshed' takes the percentage of circulation from the first document and multiplies it times the available funds to determine what should be spent in each category. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
The first document also allows you to compare from one year to another whether your circulation has increased or decreased via category and what you should look at changing.  Keep in mind that you can alter an amount.  For instance, the first year this was created we added money to the Graphic Novel area as our collection was old and not receiving circulation but our staff knew that there would be a demand for it from a number of people who struggle to read.  Since then we have automatically been able to receive a dollar percentage for this category due to circulation.

Libraries and Podcasts: The Winnipeg Public Library Experience

Description

A library podcast? What’s that?! Libraries are always striving to reach their audiences wherever their audiences may be. Podcasts can be a part of a library’s social media strategy in reaching a wider audience. Podcasts can be downloaded or streamed at any time, making them great companions for daily commutes, housework and exercise. At WPL we decided to start a monthly “book club” podcast called 'Time to Read', in which four hosts discuss a book each month, and answer questions from our library community. At the Manitoba Libraries Conference, recorded our first “Live” podcast in front of the MLC audience. We discuss the history of our podcast, including some of the challenges we faced starting a podcast. We also leave time for questions from the audience.

Bright Spot Library Practices in Manitoba: What’s Working and How Can We Do More of It?

Description

A study, by the Public Library Services Branch (PLSB), to discover the best practices of the top performing libraries in the province. The study aimed to find out why some libraries were reporting declining statistics, while other where seeing increased statics. We set out to try and determine if we could find any common elements in the libraries that were seeing increased statistics. Would it then be possible to distil best practices and then share it with the other libraries? By studying the statistics, we were able to determine which libraries had high activity in three key areas compared to their population. The process gave PLSB a starting point and means for comparison and further study. The resulting report gathers the information we discovered on common elements between these locations, and could make a good comparison for those that wish to improve their own key performance indicators like gate count, circulation and turnover

Copyright(s) Workshop: MLC 2018

Description

Librarians & Library staff are often expected to negotiate and advise in a complicated copyright landscape. As non-lawyers, we can’t give you legal advice, but as copyright practitioners we have tons of practical experience and insight we will share with active learning exercises sprinkled throughout. From copyright basics in a new light, to ways to talk copyright to patrons and stakeholders, this workshop is designed to get everyone, no matter their experience, more comfortable with copyright issues. We will also give up-to-the-minute updates on what is happening with copyright in Canada (it is a busy year!), copyright advocacy, and will involve a number of people from different library types to contribute to the conversation.
