Edmonton Public Library has an in-house Human Resources team who provide services and support in the areas of recruitment, performance management, employee and labour relations, employee recognition, workplace health, and payroll and benefits. The focus of this presentation is to provide a broad overview of human resource matters as they relate to public libraries, including best practices for recruitment and performance management, and a brief summary of relevant legislation. In addition, this session will offer some practical tools and resources that will be useful to those without dedicated human resources support. This presentation will be of most interest to those who work for small, medium and rural libraries with limited or no human resources support.

Every public and system library board in Alberta is eligible to receive provincial funding from the Public Library Services Branch in the form of an operating grant to assist with operating costs. This session will review the funding structure and its intended purpose, and will provide useful techniques to make sure that the application process is a breeze!

This panel shared the presenters’ experiences in attending, planning, and executing Indigenous events. By sharing this knowledge, it is hoped that participants will leave with an understanding of some fundamental steps in planning Indigenous inspired events. More specifically, the following questions will be tackled: What role does the Indigenous community play in the planning of events? What is the role of an Indigenous Elder? What does cultural protocol look like?

This presentation focuses on the strategic value of (re-) engaging Library teams. Staff members committed to learning, changing, growing and to getting things right as libraries transform themselves in service to ever-evolving communities, are essential our continued success.
