When to Hold On and When to Let Go: "Last Copy" Shared Print Archiving and Book Deselection

Description

At VILSC 2016, Lisa and Jean introduced a new shared print monograph initiative undertaken by 10 academic libraries in Western Canada. The Shared Print Archive Network (SPAN) Monograph Project, an initiative of COPPUL, helps ensure we retain and preserve enough copies of rare, local-interest print materials for future access by scholars and citizens. Please join us for an update on the outcomes of this exciting project! We will also demonstrate how we are analyzing our collective holdings and circulation data, using an online tool called GreenGlass, to advance local collection management goals in responsible, sustainable, evidence-based ways. Finally, we will share some of our thoughts, experiences and workflows around that bête noire of libraryland, weeding, as well as possible future uses of the data beyond deselection and retention.

Copyright(s) Workshop: MLC 2018

Description

Librarians & Library staff are often expected to negotiate and advise in a complicated copyright landscape. As non-lawyers, we can’t give you legal advice, but as copyright practitioners we have tons of practical experience and insight we will share with active learning exercises sprinkled throughout. From copyright basics in a new light, to ways to talk copyright to patrons and stakeholders, this workshop is designed to get everyone, no matter their experience, more comfortable with copyright issues. We will also give up-to-the-minute updates on what is happening with copyright in Canada (it is a busy year!), copyright advocacy, and will involve a number of people from different library types to contribute to the conversation.

All Sorts of Authority: Guiding Students Over the Threshold in Information Literacy

Description

While the ACRL Framework promotes the use of threshold concepts in information literacy, how these concepts are implemented in the classroom is left open to individual instructors. This session will highlight one useful method for engaging students in a discussion about authority. This very simple activity challenges students to look beyond “good” and “bad” sources to see how authority is constructed and how it can be deployed in different contexts.

Honouring Reconciliation: a Learning Journey

Description

In 2017 the West Vancouver Memorial Library received a Canada 150 Community Fund grant to plan and implement activities to share and promote an understanding of Canadian and local history as a way to encourage conversations about reconciliation. Honouring Reconciliation: Hearing the Truth consisted of Reading Circles, an educational exhibit, a film series and a panel discussion. It was clear from the beginning that planning this initiative was different from our usual program planning. The planning team members grappled with a number of questions. How do we create meaningful events when our processes and deadlines made it impossible to consult with Indigenous people in advance? How do we prepare ourselves to work with protocols that are new to us and that respect Indigenous ways of learning and knowing? How do we create a safe space for Library staff and members of the public to discuss topics that can be personal and emotional? This session will explore the ways that we faced these challenges through training, collaboration, dialogue and a willingness to consider new ways of operating. It will also outline the implications for the Library's work culture in the future as well as how we were impacted as individuals.
