If you are going Wild! at your library this summer you might want to try this charming craft. Nothing is wilder than a beast and after you enjoy this book you can make a beast of your own to go exploring with!
Letting in Light (PreK/K): 1 - Butterfly sun catchers
Letting in Light is a series of reconciliation programming templates designed for Saskatchewan public libraries.
Based on Giniigaaniimenaaning (Looking Ahead), by Christi Belcourt, the stained glass window in Parliament commemorating the legacy of Indian residential schools, these age-appropriate programs use a range of stained glass/sun catcher activities as a defining concept for talking about the history of residential schools.
· This is a simple, inexpensive and familiar activity for pre-K /Kindergarten or families with young children.
· In this activity we explore visual symbols and symmetry, and practice fine motor coordination.
· Some things to talk about are: family, letters, colours, light effects, butterflies, what a stained glass window is, what an apology is, the concept of change (transformation), or the pictures in the INAC colouring book or brochure.
· In some aboriginal cultures the butterfly is a symbol of childhood and in many cultures butterflies mean hope, rebirth, transformation and transcendence.
· This sun catcher program is a reconciliation activity designed to honour children who were taken away.
Materials:
A copy of the colouring book, brochure about the commemorative stained glass window. (attached pdf)

This plan includes detailed instruction and images on crafts, games and other great resources.
These are the bulletin boards I have put togther for the children's section of the library. The map bulletin board will act as a way to introduce the weekly theme or "destination" and to help the children buy into the prospect of going on an adventure and visiting a new wild destination each week.
How we are using the "Wild" Theme in 2016

Summer Reading Club Buttons
Our library created Club buttons to help promote the 2016 TD Summer Reading Club. We will give them out on registration day and hope the kids wear them throughout the summer. Attached is the template for a 2.24 inch standard-sized button.
The bulletin board is always the jumping off point for all the fun we have with the kids during the summer fun reading program.
