Information Literacy

This set of documents support the planning and delivery of a Family Literacy Fun Day event at Winnipeg Public Library.
This is a two hour (duration can be adjusted) come and go event for families to drop in and participate in literacy-based activity stations that promote the playful use of reading, writing and numeracy skills.
A passport encourages everyone to take in all the activities. Resource materials are contained in kits and stored centrally at the main downtown branch.
Branch staff book a kit for a specific date and it is sent out through the library’s delivery system.
On return, consumables are replaced. Volunteers are also arranged centrally by contacting teen members of the library’s Youth Advisory Councils.
The “FLFD Station Instructions KIT B” document is an example of one kit’s signage and instructions for display at each station.

A brochure of tips for parents and caregivers on how to use 5 simple practices to encourage development of early literacy skills in pre-school children.

A list of picture books that focus on the theme of starting school, these titles can help parents and caregiviers talk with young children about this exciting new experience, Great to distribute to families of incoming kindergarten students and at "welcome to kindergarten" events.

These modules introduce EAL learners to the library.  The activities help develop reading, writign and speaking skills and common library vocabulary.  Each topic has Canadian Language Benchmark levels 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6. Teacher notes are included, as well as answer keys.

In partnership with the Manitoba Public Service Library Branch, Winnipeg Public Library created a series of basic information handouts about Public Libraries.  The project had the English content translated into various languages to increase knowledge and audiences of public libraries.
