A library podcast? What’s that?! Libraries are always striving to reach their audiences wherever their audiences may be. Podcasts can be a part of a library’s social media strategy in reaching a wider audience. Podcasts can be downloaded or streamed at any time, making them great companions for daily commutes, housework and exercise. At WPL we decided to start a monthly “book club” podcast called 'Time to Read', in which four hosts discuss a book each month, and answer questions from our library community. At the Manitoba Libraries Conference, recorded our first “Live” podcast in front of the MLC audience. We discuss the history of our podcast, including some of the challenges we faced starting a podcast. We also leave time for questions from the audience.

Librarians & Library staff are often expected to negotiate and advise in a complicated copyright landscape. As non-lawyers, we can’t give you legal advice, but as copyright practitioners we have tons of practical experience and insight we will share with active learning exercises sprinkled throughout. From copyright basics in a new light, to ways to talk copyright to patrons and stakeholders, this workshop is designed to get everyone, no matter their experience, more comfortable with copyright issues. We will also give up-to-the-minute updates on what is happening with copyright in Canada (it is a busy year!), copyright advocacy, and will involve a number of people from different library types to contribute to the conversation.

While the ACRL Framework promotes the use of threshold concepts in information literacy, how these concepts are implemented in the classroom is left open to individual instructors. This session will highlight one useful method for engaging students in a discussion about authority. This very simple activity challenges students to look beyond “good” and “bad” sources to see how authority is constructed and how it can be deployed in different contexts.

Policies are the superstructure of library service, and this half-day workshop will introduce participants to the tools needed to build and maintain that superstructure. This will be a hands-on session with opportunities to create policies for use in your public library. Participants are encouraged to bring existing policies for collaborative review during the workshop. There will also be a lynx. Prizes will be given. This workshop will be of primary interest to CEOs/Directors and Trustees/Board Members working in a public library setting.

Demand for digital literacy learning opportunities at the public library is both increasing and diversifying. Many still need to learn the basics; privacy and security concerns are ever-present; and people of all ages want to explore advanced, cutting edge and creative technology.

Join an interactive discussion with panelists from four B.C. libraries who have recently created new, evidence-based digital literacy frameworks, programs and resources. Learn what we learned, what worked and what didn’t, and how you can adapt our work for your library.
