Library as a Creator (and Not Just an Aggregator!)

Description

What happens when librarians see a hunger in their communities for something that they can’t just order and put in the catalogue? And a pandemic that shakes up adult programming as they know it?

Our VIRL librarians got busy with the creative projects they had always wanted to bring into their libraries! They made: Sea & Cedar literary magazine for emerging and established writers and artists; Meet Me in the Stacks podcast for book-ish people; and their Virtual Gardening Series in partnership with Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association. Get inspired and learn from their process to start your own creation!

Looking Towards the Petabyte: Digital Collections Growth Strategy at UVic Libraries

Description

UVic Libraries are currently managing around 150 terabytes of data related to our unique digital collections, in multiple storage locations and across a diversity of access platforms. However, our current practices—most of which were developed in the
gigabyte era—are showing obvious signs of strain as we approach petabyte scale. As data volumes grow, we risk losing our ability to manage our assets effectively, which impacts our ability to support our user community. We will explore three key areas for improvement, namely 1) digital workflows, 2) technology, and 3) staffing.

Author

Meg Gregory, Dara Hill

Description

In 2021, the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) launched a One Book, One Community (OBOC) project in collaboration with Thompson Rivers University and the Cariboo Regional District Library. The award winning title selected was "Five Little Indians" by Michelle Good. The project became a focus for our system, informing staff development as well as programming into the spring.

We're hoping to support other OBOC projects by sharing key resources, specifically staff training resources, book club kit content, and sample marketing materials.

These resources are offered as a part of an information session offered August 2022. Thank you to all who were able to attend. The presentation file is included and find the recorded session as "Web Link."

TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE MAKERSPACE: INCORPORATING INDIGENOUS-LED PROGRAMS FOR STEAM SUCCESS

Description

Are you ready to get crafty with Indigenous traditions for 21st century learning? Learn to bridge brilliant craft traditions with STEAM literacies through Indigenous-led maker programs. In 2019, Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) launched their makerspace, the Creativity Commons to the public. Staff worked to build alliances with local stakeholders such as Indigenous artists, makers and community members interested in cultivating a reclamation of culture through the library makerspace. VIRL staff worked collaboratively to develop STEAM programs for all ages such as Traditional Drum-making, Leather Craft, Textile Art for Kids, Music-making and sound production. Through an Indigenous-led approach to program delivery, libraries can better amplify indigenous voices in a reconciliatory manner.

LESSON PLANS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR WRITING REQUIREMENTS

Description

This panel session will share the process and outcomes of a collaboration between the Libraries and the Academic and Technical Writing Program (ATWP) at UVic. The panelists will discuss how librarians and ATWP administrators have developed a shared lesson plan with consistent intended learning outcomes for students in library ATWP sessions, and how the Libraries are working to encourage a consistent library instruction style that emphasizes active, participatory learning. We’ l l discuss the tensions and challenges of navigating changes in both the Libraries’ instruction program as well as within ATWP, as well as the opportunities we have for developing a shared pedagogical approach and connecting the Libraries more effectively with campus curriculum planning and strategic enrollment management.
