Creative destruction for libraries - Workshop

Description

Expand your innovation toolkit and spark new insights for your team with this handson session that focuses on creative destruction - a fun and innovative method of problem-solving. Through a facilitated discussion and your contributed experience, you'll have an opportunity to practice a different approach to brainstorming. Together, we'll tackle a broad challenge related to library services, and explore a process that can be used to think creatively about library spaces, systems, collections, programming, or instruction.

Representation & visualization: Building a discovery tool for the Transgender Archives

Description

In order to build and maintain a healthy community, members need to understand their past. The Transgender Archives at the University of Victoria Libraries is home to the world's largest collection of trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse history. In December 2019, we proudly launched an online discovery tool to search our collection of publications, which include articles written by trailblazing community members, and historical events that shaped trans activism and history. In this presentation, Michael Radmacher (MLIS, MA) and Shahira Khair (M.Sc, MIS) will tell the story of this project, and will offer a demonstration of the new discovery tool.

Mission Remote Summer Reading Club: Explore Our Universe

Description

In light of ongoing physical distancing, PRPL has envisioned this year’s SRC as a FREE pick-up-and-go package jam packed with seven weeks of out-of-this-world fun designed to engage school-aged children, ages 5-14, with libraries and reading, throughout the summer! We thought we would share our seven Mission Activity sheets and printables with all our library friends. The BC SRC page is loaded with great activities this year, but maybe you're still looking for more. These activities will also work for any other kind of space-based program.

Visit PRPL’s YouTube to watch weekly demos of our package activities, many of which are made using simple materials that you can gather at home. Visit PRPL's website for weekly mission tips, links and bonus challenges.

Escape Room

Description

Want to build a fun escape room program that appeals to families with children, teens, and adults, but feel like you don’t have the space to make it work? Have you seen pictures from amazing escape room programs in other libraries, but don’t have a dedicated space to commit to a lengthy program? I’ll share tips, tricks, and plans for three different escape rooms we have successfully run that fit (almost) entirely on a book cart and are easy to set-up and take-down. We’ll talk about rooms with doors that don’t lock, different types of puzzles that are easy to use, how to build multiple rooms using the same materials, and ways that participants can adapt these programs for their own library spaces.
